(September 2010) Fortium Technologies is a British company based in Bridgend, South Wales that develops and licenses copy protection technologies for use on optical disc and digital files helping to prevent unauthorized copying. In 2010 its Patronus DVD anti rip copy protection was used by leading film and production companies to protect many of the winning BAFTA and Academy Award Film nominations. Patronus is also popular among videographers for use in protecting special event productions and is promoted by the Institute of Videography. Patronus has been independently tested with results published in the leading on line Digital Content Producer and Millimeter publication in a Part 1 and Part 2 series. Fortium Technologies' subsidiary, Fortium ICA Ltd, developed the ICA image composition analysis software that is used by the principal information security and compliance vendors including MessageLabs Email Image Control, Websense Virtual Image Agent and Ciphertrust Image Analysis to detect pornographic images for the purpose of Web or e-mail filtering. In 2008 Fortium ICA Ltd was sold to MessageLabs and ICA is now owned by Symantec Inc. Fortium also develops image and video fingerprinting and detection software that is used by Middle Eastern ISPs and mobile phone networks to detect culturally inappropriate content. Fortium Technologies was formerly known as First 4 Internet. According to on-line records at UK Companies House (link below), the name was changed to Fortium Technologies Ltd on 20 November 2006. Attention was drawn to First 4 Internet in connection with Sony BMG when they developed the XCP active component to copy up to three CDs that was used on some SonyBMG CDs for music copy protection. Fortium ceased developing and licensing active DRM software programs in November 2005 and since then only develops passive DRM technology.
