Contents 1 History 2 Geography 3 Demographics 4 Industry 5 Transportation 6 References 7 External links // History The name of the municipality is of recent origin and first appeared in print in 1834.[2] It was formed from the farming settlements (Bäuerten) of Grund, Bottigen, Wyler-Schattseite, Wyler-Sonnseite and the agricultural cooperative of Äppigen. Geography Innertkirchen has an area, as of 2009[update], of 120.05 square kilometers (46.4 sq mi). Of this area, 18.77 square kilometers (7.2 sq mi) or 15.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 24.15 square kilometers (9.3 sq mi) or 20.1% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.92 square kilometers (0.4 sq mi) or 0.8% is settled (buildings or roads), 1.97 square kilometers (0.8 sq mi) or 1.6% is either rivers or lakes and 74.18 square kilometers (28.6 sq mi) or 61.8% is unproductive land.[3] Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 0.3% and transportation infrastructure made up 0.3%. 13.8% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 2.4% is pastures and 13.2% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams. Of the unproductive areas, 11.5% is unproductive vegetation, 29.0% is too rocky for vegetation and 21.3% of the land is covered by glaciers.[3] Demographics Innertkirchen has a population (as of 31 December 2009) of 878.[1] As of 2007[update], 4.4% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -6.9%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (95.4%), with Portuguese being second most common (1.1%) and Italian being third (0.6%). In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 59.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (11.3%), the FDP (10.3%) and the Green Party (6.7%). The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 24% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 56.3% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 19.7%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Innertkirchen about 71.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule). Innertkirchen has an unemployment rate of 0.47%. Transportation Centre of Innertkirchen, at the crossroads between the Susten and Grimsel Pass Innertkirchen is the terminus of the local Meiringen-Innertkirchen Bahn narrow-gauge railway, which links the village with Meiringen railway station in the nearby town of Meiringen. Connection can be made here with the Brünigbahn railway from Interlaken to Lucerne.
