Mescalero Studio album by ZZ Top Released April 15, 2003 Genre Hard rock, blues-rock, Tejano Length 61:30 Label RCA Producer Billy Gibbons Professional reviews Allmusic link ZZ Top chronology XXX (1999) Mescalero (2003) Chrome, Smoke & BBQ (2003) Mescalero is the 14th studio album by American blues-rock band ZZ Top, released in 2003 (see 2003 in music). Contents 1 Name 2 Lyrical Themes 3 Reception 4 Singles 5 Track listing 6 Personnel 7 Production 8 Charts 9 Additional notes // Name The name comes from the Mescalero tribe of New Mexico. The title marks a return to the band's earlier Tejano-influenced album titles, such as Fandango, and is their first since El Loco in 1981. Lyrical Themes While most of the album is spoken in English, some songs are spoken in Spanish. An example is the first track, Mescalero, where on the verses the song is spoken in Spanish while the chorus is spoken in English. Another example is Que Lastima where the song is spoken mostly in Spanish. Reception Allmusic awarded the album 2 out of 5 stars by stating: "Apart from the dreadful misstep of 1999's XXX, they showed signs of life on all their RCA labeled albums, and their fourth, 2003's long delayed Mescalero, is no exception to the rule. Billy Gibbons' fat guitar tone really has some presence here, at least on some of the album, and there are enough rhythm tracks not performed to a didactic click track to provide some real swing." The album peaked at number 57 on the Billboard 200. Singles The only single released from the album was Piece. The single failed to chart.
