He is a 1976 graduate of Eastern Lebanon County High School.[3] He earned a degree in Business Administration from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in 1980.[3] Zug worked as a staffer for the Pennsylvania Senate and served as a member of the Lebanon City Council and the Richland Borough Council.[4] He was first elected to represent the 102nd legislative district in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1992.
