Having the serial killer slitting prostitutes' throats down to the spine and eviscerating their genitalia is based on Jack the Ripper's modus operandi, along with the theory of the killer being provoked due to a long deteriorating condition of syphilis. A deleted scene from this episode reveals Benson and Stabler were promoted to Detective Second Grade and Detective First Grade, respectively, due to their work on this case.
