Wooden Wand is one moniker of singer-songwriter James Jackson Toth, who has also recorded under his given name as well as the name WAND. One-time backing band The Vanishing Voice is a Brooklyn band composed of Jessica Bowen (formerly Jessica Toth, now of Jex Thoth), G. Lucas Crane, Heidi Diehl, and Steven Jarvis Tavaniere. The band members met at Purchase College. The style of music recorded by Toth and his many incarnations has drawn on a variety of both conventional and experimental folk and rock influences, including psych folk, acid folk, freak-folk, free folk, and indie. The Vanishing Voice collaboration has been classified under the genre of New Weird America, exemplified by a growing group of artists reviving and adapting the legacy of 1960s and '70s folk music. The Vanishing Voice collaboration is now disbanded, though the extremely prolific Toth still actively writes and records and has been on such labels as Kill Rock Stars, Ecstatic Peace!, Rykodisc, and most recently, Young God. Side projects also include Murfreesboro, TN outfit HP Witchcraft and The Jescos, a collaboration with Tim and Elizabeth Bracy of The Mendoza Line.
