(April 2010) Prakash Gopalrao Pohare (born March 17, 1954 in Akola) is the editor-in-chief of popular Marathi language daily newspaper Deshonnati.[1] He lives in Akola, where the headquarters for Deshonnati are located. Prakash Pohare is also a social activist, who is trying to gain welfare for farmers in Vidarbha. Within a period of 8 days, the volunteers collected the entire garbage of the city and dumped it in the grounds of municipal corporation. A wide coverage of the entire program was given by the media, especially the weekly magazine CHITRALEKHA. The movement of leveling and patching up of Akola city roads with the help of the residents was undertaken during the week of 12 October to 19 October 1999. This resulted in paving an important road of the city, giving relief to the residents from dust pollution and pot holes. In a report, the Tata Institute for Social Science and Indira Gandhi Institute of Social Science honoured Prakash Pohare along with Deshonnati for the research carried out on farmers' suicides. He led many agitations for the sake of farmers to acquire good value for their cotton crop. With him as a leader for cotton growers across the bounds, during the movement in 1993 cotton got a rate of Rs. 2400 as against Rs. 900 in Maharashtra. In these agitations against government, he was imprisoned number of times and many cases were filed against him. He organized aggressive strikes against country liquor shops, destroyed five such shops. For this as well he was imprisoned for 21 days and many cases were filed against him. He continuously fought against administrative corporation under information right act. Arranged nearly 540 meeting in the whole of Vidarbha region, bringing justice to the people facing injustice. This gained a lot of coverage and brought about vast awareness. On 12 December 2002, 12 thousand cotton growers agitated in legislative assembly under his leadership for cotton monopoly scheme. To bring justice to the families of those farmers who had committed suicide, he filed a petition in the Mumbai high court and obtained an order for giving Rs. 1 lakh for each of the suffering families. Due to this thousands of families were benefited. Established Samagra Vikas Aghadi to give effectiveness to farmers for their fight against injustice. More than 200 meetings were arranged in Vidarbha for creating awareness. In reference to farmers' suicides and freedom from loans, he presented a paper in Delhi on the 30th of October 2006 along with the senior Gandhian Leader Mohan Dharia, before The Honourable Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Honourable Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Honourable Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Honourable Antuleji, President of Planning Commission and other ministers of the central government. This resulted in freedom from loans for all the concerned farmers. On the 14th of June 2007 he presented the statistics, problem and the likely solution relating to farmers' suicide, to our Honourable President. Tried circulating the thoughts of production of poison free food grains and low budget agriculture. Started a movement on the 1st of April 2008 against the ban on lakhodi pulses along with Shantilalji Kothari by arranging open sale of lakhodi dal in 265 places in Vidarbha, which forced the government to lift the ban on 28 May 2008. Organized agitations against load shedding in Vidarbha as of August 2008. Arranged public awareness program in favor of opening of distilleries, to produce ethanol from jawar which resulted in lifting the ban imposed by the High Court. Arranged public awareness in relation to effective planning of ‘Developed Vidarbha’ before separate Vidarbha. Foreign tours: Visited countries in the European continent like Belgium, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain along with other countries of different continents like South Korea, America and Nepal for study in the fields of agriculture and media. Had the privilege to accompany our honourable president for a 13 day tour (12/04/2008 to 23/04/2008) of countries like Brazil, Chili, Mexico, Portugal, etc. of Latin America.
