Contents 1 Creation 1.1 Development 2 Storylines 3 References 4 External links // Creation It was announced in October 2009 that Burton would be joining the cast of the popular BBC drama series Waterloo Road as new Head Teacher, Karen Fisher.[1] Of the casting, Head of Independent Drama for BBC Scotland, Anne Mensah said: "Amanda is an actress of exceptional quality and enormous popularity with the audience. We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming her to Waterloo Road. We have a fantastic cast and brilliant new stories to tell as the programme continues to go from strength to strength."[1] Burton, who had previously starred as Dr. Sam Ryan in Silent Witness said: "I'm very excited to join Waterloo Road which is such a well-known and well-loved series. I can't wait to get started on the programme and am very much looking forward to my first day on set with the cast and crew."[2] Development Burton began filming for the role in the show's sixth series in November 2009 and appeared on screen from 2010. Storylines On her first day at Waterloo Road, Karen is extremely nervous, and decides to make big changes. This includes getting rid of the cooler, much to the annoyance of teachers such as Grantly Budgen and Tom Clarkson but was however re-instated shortly after. Marcus Kirby refused to allow his children Jonah and Ruth to attend Waterloo Road, however after much convincing by his wife they attend. Ruth, eventually ran away from the school, as she could no longer bare Waterloo Road. Karen is horrified, and blames herself. She alongside with deputy head Christopher Mead search together, and it was Tom who found Ruth. Ruth remains in Waterloo Road, and Karen returns home to her family. Tom manages to persuade her to bring back Sambuca Kelly, but is left annoyed when Sam, and her son Harry skip school. Karen is left horrified when Jess writes an article about Bex's disappearance, claiming Karen is the one to blame, this devastates Karen, who then reveals the real story to the staffroom. Karen later forgives Jess. Harry reveals that Charlie is having an affair with the new Spanish teacher Francesca Montoya, however it turns out that he's cheating with another woman, and Cesca knows about it. Karen is left devastated when she sees the woman Charlie's cheating with. Karen struggles to come to terms with the affair, and acts strangely. Chris expresses his concern with Jess, and Karen comforts her, but Jess does not care. Later, Charlie informs Karen he has ended his affair with Maria. However the marriage comes to an end, and Charlie leaves Karen for Maria. Karen gives Parent, Marcus Kirby a job at the school, and his first day goes dramaticly. She then allows Jess's friend Vicki MacDonald to stay at their home. Karen is soon horrified to find out that her son, Harry Fisher has bulimia after Finn Sharkey taunts him about it right in front of her. Karen decides that there needs to be a change made between herself and her husband to help their son on the road to recovery. They both agree, for Harry's sake that they both need to act like grown ups and have equal opportunities to see their children.
