The Student Work Advisory Team assists the Police at community events such as, the annual Police carnival, Community Day, and the Coho Festival. The students also assist in crime prevention initiatives while working directly with Cst. English, such as theft from auto prevention and traffic safety initiatives such as pedestrian safety. Controversy On 26 June 2007, the police board announced that it has hired Kashmir (Kash) Heed to begin as the new Chief Constable beginning 2 August 2007 after Heed lost out to Jim Chu to head the Vancouver Police Department. The department has been without a Chief Constable since 5 December 2006 when Scott Armstrong was terminated shortly after public revelations about after-hours drinking parties at the police station and a drunk driving arrest of a West Vancouver police constable. The city's mayor denied that Armstrong's termination was related to these controversies.[3] Chief Heed resigned suddenly on February 23, 2009.[4] On January 21, 2009, three off duty police officers were arrested and detained overnight after being alleged to racially abuse, assault and participated in a robbery in downtown Vancouver against Firoz (Phil) Khan, a newspaper deliveryman. The police constables came from the Delta Police Department, West Vancouver Police Department and New Westminster Police Service. On January 26, 2009, the Vancouver Police Department recommended to Crown Counsel for criminal charges to be laid against the NWPS member Jeffrey Roger Klassen for assault and possession of stolen property and the WVPD officer Griffin Gillan for robbery. At the same time, the DPD officer was cleared of any wrongdoing.[5] On January 27, 2009, Cst. Gillan was suspended with pay for 30 days pending criminal charges to be laid.[6] On January 28, 2009, Crown counsel approved one count of assault against Cst. Klassen and one count of robbery against Cst. Gillan.[7] They are due to appear in court on February 9, 2009.[8] On February 27, 2009, a new charge of possession of stolen property was laid against Cst. Klassen and the police board decided to take him off payroll[9][10] An independent investigation into the incident could also be launched by The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner British Columbia once Crown Counsel has cleared the case.
