Temporary Lieutenant Harold Reginald Newgass (3 August 1896-17 November 1984) of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve attached to HMS President was awarded the George Cross for the "great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty" he showed in defusing a mine which had fallen into a gas holder at the Garston Gas Works in Liverpool. His citation was published in the London Gazette on the 4th of March, 1941.
