A right-handed sidearm pitcher, Wassermann made his Major League Baseball debut with the White Sox on July 20, 2007, against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, retiring both batters faced. College and minor leagues Wassermann attended Jefferson Davis Community College before transferring to Samford University, majoring in sports medicine, in Homewood, Alabama. In his junior year, he posted a 4.04 ERA as a starter and led the staff in appearances (25), innings pitched (91.1), and saves (3). He was second in ERA and strikeouts (65). Wassermann was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 after attending a tryout camp for the White Sox; he sold knives in between attending tryouts. That same year, he started his minor league career with the Bristol White Sox while posting an 0-1 record and a 14.23 ERA in four appearances. In 2007, he was promoted to the Triple-A Charlotte Knights before being called up to the White Sox on July 17 after the demotion of relief pitcher Nick Masset.
